Brazil: Economic activity stutters in October

December 17, 2018

In October, economic activity recorded zero growth in seasonally-adjusted month-on-month terms, according to the Central Bank’s monthly indicator for economic activity (IBC-Br, Indice de Atividade Economica do Banco Central). The result was a slight improvement from September’s 0.2% contraction.

On an annual basis, economic activity grew a notable 3.0% in October, up from September’s 0.9% and the best reading in six months. Annual average growth in economic activity, however, was unchanged at September’s 1.5%.

The analysts surveyed for this month’s LatinFocus Consensus Forecast expect the economy to grow 2.3% in 2019, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate. For 2020, the panel of analysts sees GDP rising 2.5%.
