Belarus: Industrial sector gains steam in July

August 19, 2019

Industrial activity picked up in July, growing 3.6% year-on-year following a 0.9% contraction in June.

The manufacturing sector led the upturn, reflecting a surge in the production of transport vehicles and equipment, and the manufacture of electrical equipment. This was followed by a solid rise in mining and quarrying, and resilient outturn in the water supply sector. Meanwhile, the electricity, gas, steam, hot water and conditioning supply logged flat growth.

Lastly, annual average growth in industrial production edged down to 1.7% in July from 1.9% in June, marking the lowest print since March 2017.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will expand 3.5% this year, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2020, panelists expect industrial production to rise 3.2%.
