Austria: Industrial production contracts at the close of the first quarter

May 25, 2018

On a month-on-month seasonally-adjusted basis, industrial production contracted 1.6% in March, contrasting the prior month’s revised 1.1% expansion (previously reported: +0.3% month-on-month). The result reflected noticeable contractions in the manufacturing and water supply subsectors, while the mining sector was flat, and the energy sector recorded an increase in production.

Industrial production expanded 3.9% over a year ago in March, which is down markedly from the prior month’s 5.1% increase.

Finally, annual average growth in industrial output increased from February’s revised 5.3% (previously reported: +5.2%) to 5.5%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will increase 5.0% in 2018, which is up 1.5 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2019, the panel expects that industrial production will grow 3.2%.
