GDP in Cambodia
Cambodia - GDPThe economy remains on track to record strong growth this year supported by resilient activity in the construction and garment sectors and a pickup in global demand. Exports recorded healthy year-on-year growth in Q1, but the fragile financial sector poses a downside risk to the economy. Hence, development of the sector is a main goal of the government. In the run-up to next year’s elections, the National Assembly passed a bill barring political parties that have affiliates with criminal links. The opposition claims that this move aims to reign in the appeal of Sam Rainsy, the former leader of the National Rescue Party (NRP), who is critical of the government and was convicted of criminal defamation earlier in the year. Moreover, the bill comes on the back of recent sizeable gains made by opposition parties, which analysts say unnerved the ruling party.
