GDP in Cambodia
Cambodia - GDPResilient domestic demand allowed Cambodia’s economy to continue on its strong growth trajectory of the past few years in 2016. Domestic demand benefitted from sustained credit growth, higher exports and sky-rocketing construction activity. On 14 March, politician Kem Sokha became the new head of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) and thus the de facto leader of the opposition. The previous head of CNRP Sam Rainsy resigned in mid-February after the government convicted him on defamation charges, which his party denounced as part of a political clampdown by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party. Analysts believe Sokha could increase his party’s support in rural areas ahead of local elections in June this year.
