The economy is set to sink deeper into recession after the Trump administration recently announced it would not extend waivers on Iranian oil exports which expired on 1 May. The move will hit the already-embattled external sector, crippling exports and depressing business confidence. Even before the waivers expired, shipments of seaborne crude oil exports fell below 1 mbpd in April, while crude oil production decreased in March, bringing the average for Q1 down notably compared to Q4 of last year. To make matters worse, recent flooding has caused more than USD 2 billion of damages, according to government officials. Trump’s announcement also triggered another depreciation of the rial in the parallel market, which could stoke already sky-high inflation.
