Switzerland: Retail sales rebound in February

April 3, 2017

In February, retail sales increased a seasonally and working-day adjusted 0.6% from the same month of last year, rebounding from the 1.2% drop registered in January and marking a three-month high.

On a monthly basis, retail sales adjusted for seasonal factors also increased 0.6% in February, matching January’s result. The annual average variation in retail sales inched up from minus 1.9% in January—the worst result on record—to minus 1.8% in February, still painting a bleak picture of the Swiss retail sector despite the minor improvement.

Panelists polled by FocusEconomics expect private consumption to expand 1.3% in 2017, which is up 0.2 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2018, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.4%.
