Inflation in Jordan

Jordan - Inflation

The economy is set to have contracted in Q2, after growth slowed in Q1, due to pandemic-related containment measures. Industrial production slumped, while the restrictions likely dragged on private consumption and pushed the unemployment rate up further from Q1’s over-10-year high. Moreover, total exports contracted markedly in annual terms in H1 due to global trade disruptions, although the trade balance deficit decreased by over a quarter in the same period, as imports plunged at a sharper pace than exports. Turning to Q3, activity is likely recovering thanks to an easing of restrictions. International financial assistance granted earlier this year should be bolstering economic activity, while the reopening of borders from early September bodes well for the tourism sector. However, a recent surge of Covid-19 cases could lead to tighter measures once again.
