Yemen - Current Account

In recent weeks, artillery fire between Iran-aligned Houthi forces and Saudi-backed government troops has reportedly continued in the port city of Hodeidah, which is a critical entry-exit point for merchandise trade and aid. Despite this, however, there are signs of incremental peace progress: Houthi troops unilaterally withdrew from three ports in the Hodeidah province in May as part of an UN-mediated ceasefire agreement, and the UN said on 12 June that they have not returned since. Moreover, it was announced on 18 June that an agreement between the Houthis and the UN had been reached on a mechanism to inspect ships docking in Hodeidah ports, boosting the chances of this progress being maintained. A return to peace across Yemen, however distant, is vital for the downtrodden economy to recover.
