Yemen - Current Account

The conflict in Yemen has dramatically escalated in recent weeks, hitting an already-battered economy and dampening prospects of a short-term economic recovery. In August, forces aligned with the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) launched an attack on Aden, which had been the temporary seat of President Hadi’s administration, and gained control of the southern city. The STC is supported by the UAE, which, along with Saudi Arabia, backs the Yemeni government’s fight against the Houthi rebels in the north west of the country. As a result, tensions between the three nominal allies have increased and the risk of further battles in Aden appears heightened. On the diplomatic front, Saudi Arabia is making efforts to de-escalate the stand-off in Aden, while the U.S. government is reportedly planning on making overtures to the Houthis to get them and the Saudis into negotiations.
