GDP contracted sequentially in Q3. The downturn was broad-based, with household and public spending, fixed investment and exports all shrinking amid sticky inflation, higher interest rates and weak external demand. The economy likely rebounded in Q4. Businesses became significantly more optimistic in the quarter following the victory of pro-market parties in October’s elections, likely supporting investment. Consumer sentiment also strengthened in the period, likely boosting private spending. Moreover, merchandise exports fell at a notably softer clip in October-November than in Q3. Meanwhile, home values increased at a faster pace in Q4 than in Q3, potentially boosting household wealth and therefore spending. In politics, the government released updated forecasts for the FY 2023 (July 2023-June 2024) fiscal deficit, cutting it from NZD 11.4 billion to NZD 9.3 billion.
