GDP growth slowed further year on year in Q3 from the first six months of 2023, reflecting a sharper drop in agricultural production due to a drought and weak growth in wholesale and retail sales owing to sticky inflation, elevated interest rates and a greater fall in remittances. That said, tourism remained robust, and mining activity continued to grow at over 100%. Turning to Q4, inflation declined slightly but remained elevated; meanwhile, in October–November, remittances continued to drop. These dynamics suggest that household spending likely remained muted in the quarter. In other news, the government recently announced that local elections will be held on 26 February. The polls are likely to show an increase in support for the main opposition party, the center-left PNP, acting as a barometer ahead of general elections due in 2025.
