In April–June 2023, economic activity shrank 0.3% year on year, bringing the contraction in the first nine months of FY 2023 (October 2022–September 2023) to 2.1%. As in the prior two quarters, primary and secondary sector output fell in April–June 2023, while the tertiary sector flipped to weak growth; floods, a border dispute with the Dominican Republic and, above all, gang violence have significantly hit activity. That said, the economy appears to be gradually stabilizing. Higher customs taxes have helped reduce monetary financing of the deficit, in turn reducing inflation and supporting the exchange rate and international reserves. In other news, in January, Kenya’s Prime Minister vowed to send police to Haiti to help boost security, despite a recent court ruling that could slow deployment by several months. Better security is essential if Haiti’s economy is to substantially recover.
