After entering a technical recession in Q3, GDP likely contracted sequentially again in Q4 as the economy continued to feel the pinch of the Riksbank’s tight monetary policy stance. Private consumption flatlined in October–November in monthly terms, deteriorating from Q3’s marginal expansion amid still-above-target inflation. Additionally, business sentiment deteriorated from Q3 in Q4, boding ill for investment, and the services PMI averaged below Q3’s level in the three months to December. Meanwhile, the manufacturing PMI improved from Q3, but manufacturing sector operating conditions still deteriorated in Q4. More positively, monthly retail sales improved in October–November from Q3 and monthly GDP expanded 0.6% on average in the same two-month period, up from the flat average reading in Q3. In geopolitics, on 23 January, Turkey cleared Sweden’s NATO bid, leaving Hungary’s approval as the last hurdle.
