The economy ended 2023 on a high note: Growth surged to 6.2% year on year in January–December (January–November: +4.4% yoy). Stronger expansions in industrial output, agricultural production and fixed investment drove the improvement. Consumer spending was likely also resilient at the tail-end of the year, as the hospitality industry strengthened from the prior month, and wholesale and retail trade growth was broadly stable. Moreover, goods exports rose by over 130% in January–December, signaling robust external demand. In other news, Kyrgyzstan announced in January that it would open the Bedel checkpoint—a third border crossing with China—and a four-lane bridge at the Irkeshtam crossing in 2024, boding well for trade. Meanwhile, a recent crackdown on the media sparked international criticism and could provoke Western sanctions.
