Spain: Housing permits continue to decline in January

In January, the Spanish Board of Architects (Colegio de Arquitectos Tecnicos) granted 8,766 construction permits, according to data published by the Ministry of Public Works (Ministerio de Fomento), which is down from the 10,350 permits approved in December. The moving 3-month sum totaled 29,512 permits in the period ending in January, which represented a 7.7% contraction compared to the 31,961 permits approved in the same period of the previous year. The latest decline continues the downward trend observed since mid-2007, and at the current level, permits are only a fraction of the peak of 279,070 granted in the July-September period of 2006.
