Romania: Inflation accelerates in January
February 12, 2013
In January, consumer prices jumped 1.3% over the previous month, which was well above both the 0.6% increase recorded in December and market expectations of a 0.8% rise. The monthly increase was the result of higher prices for food and non-food items, which more than offset lower prices for services.
As a result, annual headline inflation climbed from 5.0% in December to 6.0% in January, above the Central Bank's tolerance margin of 2.5% plus/minus 1.0%. The reading exceeded market expectations of a 5.4% rate. Annual average inflation rose from 3.3% in December to 3.6% in January.
The Bank expects inflation to end this year at 3.5%.
