Romania: Inflation accelerates to highest level in a year

September 11, 2012

In August, consumer prices added 0.51% over the previous month, which followed the 0.59% increase recorded in July. The increase was the result of higher prices in all categories, particularly food items. As a result, annual headline inflation jumped from 3.0% in July to 3.9% in August, exceeding market expectations of a 3.7% rate. In addition, the reading marked the highest rate seen in a year. Annual average inflation, however, inched down from 2.9% in July to 2.8%. The Central Bank expects inflation to end the year at 3.2% and to moderate to 3.0% in 2013
