France: Inflation remains stable in February

March 13, 2012

In February, consumer prices rose 0.4% over the previous month, which contrasted the 0.4% decrease recorded in January. The monthly increase came on the back of higher prices for energy and food products. Annual inflation, however, remained unchanged at January's 2.3%, undershooting market expectations that had inflation inching up to 2.4%. The core inflation index, which excludes more volatile categories such as oil, or fruit and vegetables, remained unchanged over the previous month, which followed the 0.1% decrease recorded in January. As a result, annual core inflation eased from 1.5% in January to 1.4% in February. Finally, HICP inflation (based on the harmonized index of consumer prices) inched down to 2.5% from 2.6% in January.
