Malta - Trade Balance (Euros)

Growth decelerated notably in Q1 on a significant slowdown in household spending amid cooling consumer confidence and faster inflation. A marked rebound in fixed investment cushioned the slowdown, however. Momentum seems to have eased further in Q2. Although the unemployment rate continued to hover at record lows in April, and consumer sentiment recovered some lost ground in the first two months of Q2, business confidence dived into pessimistic territory in the April-May period. Moreover, April’s figures on tourist inflows and expenditure confirm the sector is gradually losing momentum. On the fiscal front, the budget deficit widened markedly in the first four months of 2019, on much higher recurrent and capital government spending.
