GDP in Macedonia
Macedonia - GDPThe latest national accounts data reveals the economic damage caused by prolonged political turbulence. GDP growth contracted a steep 1.8% in annual terms in Q2, coming in below Q1’s flat rate and marking the worst print in years. Growth was dragged down by a 19.9% contraction in fixed investment, which more than offset faster growth in private consumption and a solid external sector. Despite the abysmal reading, there are reasons to believe the worst is past following the formation of a government at the end of Q2. The new government is making headways to improve the business climate and attract greater FDI inflows. Noting this, S&P Global Ratings affirmed the country’s BB-/B and stable outlook in its September review.
