Azerbaijan - GDP per capita (U.S. Dollars)The economy seemed to maintain momentum in the third quarter, spearheaded by an upturn in non-oil and gas activity. Industrial output rose at a healthy pace, while slightly stronger retail sales growth indicates sturdier consumer demand in the quarter. That said, merchandise export growth was virtually flat in July–August, boding ill for the external sector, while dynamics in the oil and gas sector softened. In other news, after the unexpected resignation of Norvuz Mamedov, Parliament unanimously approved Ali Asadov, a president aide, as the new prime minister on 8 October. Meanwhile, amid rising tensions in mid-October, authorities cracked down on the opposition’s pro-democracy protests, detaining Ali Kerimli, the leader of the Popular Front, and scores of activists. Against this backdrop, President Ilham Aliyev accused the government of obstructing economic reforms and failing to provide accurate growth forecasts.
