GDP per capita in Algeria
Algeria - GDP per capita (U.S. Dollars)Although growth in H1 should have been aided by a base effect, underlying momentum was likely subdued. Turning to Q3, the non-petroleum sector likely struggled: A rise in Covid-19 cases forced an extension of the curfew in the period, likely denting private consumption. Prospects for the petroleum sector appeared more favorable, with both prices and production continuing to tick up. In Q4, the vaccine rollout has accelerated, permitting the curfew to be lifted from mid-October. However, the positive impact on consumption could be partly offset by soaring food prices. In politics, the government recently confirmed its plans to close the Maghreb gas pipeline after October, which will reduce revenue. The government also put forward its 2022 budget, which aims to cut costly subsidies. The measures should boost long-term macroeconomic stability, albeit at the risk of stoking social tensions.
