Vietnam: Average inflation drops to lowest level since 2002

In August, consumer prices fell 0.08%, which contrasted July’s increase of 0.13%. According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, July’s price decrease resulted from falls in 4 of the 11 components of the index, with the traffic component observing the largest decrease.

Inflation inched down from 0.9% in July to 0.6% in August, resulting in the lowest figure in six months. Annual average inflation decreased from 1.8% in July to 1.5% in August, which marked the lowest level since May 2002. As a result, average inflation dropped further below the Central Bank’s target of 5.0% for 2015.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to average 1.8% in 2015, which is down 0.5 percentage points from last month’s forecast. According to the panel, average inflation will accelerate to 4.0% in 2016.
