Vietnam: Average inflation drops to lowest level in over a decade

In July, consumer prices increased 0.13%, which was below June’s reading of 0.35%. According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, July’s price increase resulted from modest gains in 10 of the 11 components of the index, while postal services and communication saw the only monthly decrease.

Inflation inched down from June’s 1.0% to 0.9% in July, resulting in the lowest figure in five months. Annual average inflation decreased from 2.1% in June to 1.8% in July, which marked the lowest level since June 2002. As a result, average inflation dropped further below the Central Bank’s target of 5.0% for 2015.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to average 1.8% in 2015, which is down 0.5 percentage points from last month’s forecast. According to the panel, average inflation will accelerate to 4.0% in 2016.
