Vietnam: Growth in industrial production eases marginally in May

May 28, 2016

In May, industrial output rose 7.8% over the same month last year, which came below the 7.9% rise recorded in April. The deceleration came on the back of a contraction in mining and quarrying and a softer expansion in two of the four components of the index that more an offset an acceleration in water supply and waste management.

Industrial production in April rose 2.4% over the previous month, which contrasted with the 10.2% contraction tallied in April. Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production remained unchanged in May at the 8.7% reading tallied in April.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants estimate that industrial output will grow 9.8% in 2016, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists expect that industrial production will expand 9.6%.
