Vietnam: Growth in GDP accelerates in Q1

In the first three months up to March, GDP expanded 6.3% over the same period last year, according to data released by the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Vietnam. The figure marked an improvement over the 5.0% rise recorded in the same period last year.

At the sector level, agriculture expanded 2.1% over the same period last year (Jan-Mar 2014: +2.4% year-on-year). In addition, services rose 5.8% in the three months up to March, which was below the 6.0% increase observed in the same period last year. Conversely, industry expanded 8.3% (Jan-Mar 2014: +4.7% yoy).

The government targets growth of 6.2% for 2015. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see the economy growing 6.2% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists project the economy to expand 6.3%.
