Vietnam: GDP growth accelerates in Q3

In Q3 2015, GDP expanded 6.8% over the same period last year, according to data released by the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Vietnam. This marked an improvement over Q2’s revised 6.5% expansion (previously reported: +6.4% year-on-year).

In the first nine months up to September, GDP expanded 6.5% over the same period last year, marking a record high figure for the series. At the sector level, agriculture expanded 2.1% over the same period last year (Jan-Sep 2014: +3.0% yoy). In addition, services rose 8.4% in the nine months up to September, which was above the 6.0% increase observed in the same period last year. The industry sector observed a sharp expansion of 9.6% (Jan-Sep 2014: +6.4% yoy).

The government targets growth of 6.2% for 2015. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see the economy growing 6.4% in 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists project the economy also to expand 6.4%.
