Vietnam: Economy picks up in Q2

In the six months up to June, GDP expanded 5.2% over the same period last year, according to data released by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO). The figure marked an improvement over the 4.9% rise recorded in the same period last year.

At the sector level, the improvement was broad-based. Services expanded 6.0% over the same period last year (Jan-June 2013: +5.9 year-on-year). Industry rose 5.5% in the six months up to June, which was an improvement over the 5.2% increase seen in the first six months of 2013. In addition, agriculture added 3.0% (Jan-June 2013. +2.1% yoy).

The figure for Q2 showed that GDP expanded 5.3% over the same period of the previous year, up from the 5.0% increase seen in the previous quarter.

The government targets growth of 5.8% for 2014. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see the economy growing 5.6% in 2014, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2015, panelists project the economy will expand 5.9%.
