MarchThe Conference Board consumer confidence index jumped from 78.3 points in February (previously reported: 78.1 points) to 82.3 points in March. The reading surpassed market expectations of a rise to 78.5 points and marked the highest point in over six years. March's rise in confidence was driven by an improvement in consumers' expectations regarding their personal finances over the next 12 months. Consumers' assessment on the future job market was moderately more positive; a greater number of people anticipated fewer jobs in the coming months. Households surveyed had a slightly less optimistic outlook on their current financial situations. The director of the Board explained that, “consumer confidence improved in March, as expectations for the short-term outlook bounced back from February's decline. Overall, consumers expect the economy to continue improving and believe it may even pick up a little steam in the months ahead.” 's rise in confidence was driven by an improvement in consumers' expectations regarding their personal finances over the next 12 months.
