United Kingdom: Unemployment stable in June

August 12, 2015

In July, jobless claims fell 4,900 over the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The print contrasted both the revised 200 increase recorded in June (previously reported: +7,100) and the 1,500 increase in jobless claims the markets had expected.

The unemployment rate—derived from a different survey—was stable at May’s 5.6% in June (the latest period for which data are available). The figure met market expectations.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 5.6% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel expects the unemployment rate to inch down to 5.5%.
