United Kingdom: Unemployment remains unchanged in January

March 16, 2016

In February, jobless claims fell 18,000 over the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The print followed the revised decrease of 28,400 in jobless claims recorded in January (previously reported: +14,800 increase) and undershot the 9,100 decrease in jobless claims the markets had expected.

The unemployment rate—derived from a different survey—was stable in January at the previous month’s 5.1% (the latest period for which data are available), thus remaining at a multi-year low. The figure met market expectations.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 5.5% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects the unemployment rate to inch down to 5.2%.
