United Kingdom: Unemployment remains stable in February

April 20, 2016

In March, jobless claims increased 6,700 over the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The print contrasted the revised decrease of 9,300 in jobless claims recorded in February (previously reported: 18,000 decrease) and overshot the 11,300 decrease in jobless claims the markets had expected.

The unemployment rate—derived from a different survey—was stable in February at the previous month’s 5.1% (the latest period for which data are available), thus remaining at a multi-year low. The figure met market expectations.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 5.5% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects the unemployment rate to inch down to 5.2%.
