United Kingdom: Unemployment rate unchanged at multi-year low in December

February 15, 2017

Jobless claims decreased by 42,400 in January compared to the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the largest monthly decline since October 2013. The print followed the revised 20,600 drop in jobless claims recorded in December (previously reported: 10,200 drop) and confounded market expectations of a slight rise in the claimant count.

The unemployment rate—derived from a different survey—was 4.8% in December (the latest period for which data is available), matching November’s print and in line with analysts’ expectations.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 5.2% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, the panel expects the unemployment rate to increase to 5.5%.
