United Kingdom: Unemployment inches up in May

In June, jobless claims rose 7,100 over the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The print contrasted the revised 1,200 decrease recorded in May (previously reported: -6,500) and the 8,800 decrease in jobless claims the markets had expected.

The unemployment rate—derived from a different survey—inched up from 5.5% in April to 5.6% in May (the latest period for which data are available. The figure was up from the 5.5% expected by the markets.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 5.6% in 2015, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel expects the unemployment rate to inch down to 5.5%.
