United Kingdom: Industry rebounds in January

In January, industrial production expanded 0.3% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, which contrasted the 1.1% decrease seen in December, and marked a five-month high. Manufacturing increased 0.7% in January, which contrasted the previous month’s 0.3% drop. The monthly increase reflected contractions in mining and quarrying as well as in oil, gas and electricity.

Industrial production expanded 0.2% over the same month of the previous year, which contrasted the 0.2% decrease recorded in December. Annual average growth in industrial production inched down from 1.0% in December to 0.9% in January.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will increase 1.3% in 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points over the previous month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects that industrial production will increase 1.5%.
