United Kingdom: Industry improves in July

In July, industrial production expanded 0.1% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, which contrasted the flat reading recorded in June. The monthly acceleration reflected an improvement in mining and quarrying, which accelerated from a 1.6% increase in June to a 4.7% rise in July. Conversely, the manufacturing sector contracted 0.9%, which contrasted the 0.2% increase observed in the previous month.

Industrial production expanded 2.1% over the same month last year in July, which was up from the 1.4% increase seen in June. Annual average growth in industrial production inched up from 1.0% in June to 1.1% in July.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will increase 0.2% in 2016, which is up 0.1 percentage points over the previous month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects that industrial production will increase 0.2%.
