United Kingdom: Industry improves again in April

In April, industrial production increased 2.0% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, which was an improvement over the 0.3% increase tallied in March. The monthly increase broadly reflected an expansion in the manufacturing sector, which accelerated from a 0.1% increase in March to a 2.3% rise in April. The electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning sector improved as well over the previous month. Moreover, the mining and quarrying sector contracted 0.3% in April, which was slightly up from the 0.4% drop tallied in March.

Industrial production expanded 1.6% over the same month of the previous year in April, which contrasted the 0.2% decrease recorded in March. Annual average growth in industrial production inched up from 0.8% in March to 0.9% in April.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will increase 1.3% in 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points over the previous month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects that industrial production will increase 1.5%.
