Ukraine: Inflation moderates in December

January 11, 2019

Consumer prices rose 0.8% month-on-month in December, marking a four-month low (November: +1.7% month-on-month). According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the result largely reflected higher prices for food, and miscellaneous goods and services partly offset by lower prices for transport, and clothing and footwear.

Inflation eased to 9.8% in December, from 10.0% in November, edging slightly closer to the Central Bank’s 6.5% plus or minus 2.0 percentage points target range. Meanwhile, annual average inflation continued to fall in December, coming in at a 20-month low of 11.0% (November: 11.3%).

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to end 2019 at 7.8%, which is up 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2020, the panel sees year-end inflation easing to 6.8%.
