Ukraine: Inflation continues to ease in August

September 9, 2015

Consumer prices fell 0.8% in August over the previous month, which was a more moderate decline compared to the 1.0% drop registered in July, which had marked a four-year low.

Inflation eased further in August, marking the fourth consecutive month of moderation, which has interrupted the surging upward trend that was in place for over a year. Inflation fell from July’s 55.3% to 52.8% in August, which marked a five-month low. Despite the moderation, inflation remains at historically high levels since skyrocketing at the onset of the military conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Annual average variation in consumer prices continued to rise in August, increasing from 36.6% in July to 39.8%, which marked the highest level on record.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect inflation to end 2015 at 47.4%, which is down 0.9 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees inflation easing to 15.9%.
