Ukraine: Recovery stalls again in Q2

August 31, 2017

Ukraine’s economy continued to struggle in Q2, after the recovery stumbled in Q1. According to a preliminary estimate released by State Statistics Service Ukraine, GDP increased 2.4% over the same period last year, which was a notch below Q1’s 2.5% increase and a notable deterioration from the 4.8% growth recorded in Q4.

Although a breakdown by components is not yet available, the slowdown was likely driven by dampened industrial production due to the economic blockade with the Donbass region. The blockade has disrupted internal links within the country and is taking a toll on Ukraine’s ability to produce and export products.

FocusEconomics panelists expect GDP to expand 2.0% in 2017, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists expect the economy to accelerate to a 2.9% expansion.
