Ukraine: GDP expands in Q4
January 30, 2014
In the fourth quarter, GDP expanded 3.7% over the same period the previous year according to a preliminary estimate released by the National Statistics Institute on 30 January. The expansion contrasted the 1.3% fall observed in the third quarter. Moreover, the print represents the first annual expansion since Q2 2012. For the full year 2013, GDP registered flat growth, which was a notch down from the 0.2% expansion recorded in 2012.
A quarter-on-quarter comparison corroborates the expansion suggested by the annual figures; the economy expanded a seasonally-adjusted 2.4% in Q4, which contrasted the 0.3% fall observed in Q3. If the preliminary result is confirmed then Ukraine will have exited the technical recession at the end of 2013. A revised and more complete set of data will be made available in March.
FocusEconomics participants see the economy expanding 1.3% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month's forecast. For 2015, panelists expect that the economy will grow 2.9%.
