Thailand: Trade balance records surplus on expanding exports

January 30, 2015

In December, the trade balance recorded a USD 1.6 billion surplus, which contrasted both the USD 410 million deficit observed in the same month of the previous year and the USD 80 million deficit registered last month. The 12-month moving sum of the trade deficit decreased from USD 2.4 billion in November to USD 400 million in December, which represented the lowest deficit since October 2011.

Exports in December rose 1.9% over the same month of the previous year, which contrasted the 1.0% decrease observed in the previous month. However, imports fell 8.7% in December, which was a deterioration over the 3.5% decrease seen in November.

In 2015, FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect exports to increase 1.6% (USD 229.8 billion) and they see the trade surplus reaching USD 17.9 billion. For 2016, panelists expect export growth to accelerate to 4.8% (USD 240.9 billion) and the surplus to narrow to USD 17.1 billion.
