Thailand: Manufacturing production rebounds strongly in August

In August, manufacturing production increased 3.1% over the same month last year, which was a sharp upswing from the 5.0% contraction seen in July and marked the highest reading in over three years. The manufacturing of machinery and equipment recorded the steepest rise, though the majority of the sub-sectors saw an increase in output in August.

On a monthly basis, manufacturing output increased a seasonally-adjusted 6.4% in August, which was a robust rebound from the 3.9% decline recorded in July and the strongest figure in 33 months. Finally, annual average growth in manufacturing production was flat in August, which came in above the 0.2% drop seen in July.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecasts panelists expect manufacturing to expand 1.1% in 2016, which is down 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. For 2017, the panel expects manufacturing to increase 2.7%.
