Switzerland: Retail sales increase in November for first time since July 2015

In November, retail sales grew a seasonally- and working-day adjusted 0.9% from the same month last year, which was the first expansion in 16 months. December’s reading contrasted November’s 0.7% decline and beat market expectations of a 0.4% increase.

On a monthly basis, retail sales adjusted for seasonal factors increased 0.7% in November, which was below the 1.1% expansion seen in October. The annual average variation in retail sales inched up from October’s 1.9% fall to a 1.7% contraction in November.

Panelists polled by FocusEconomics expect private consumption to expand 1.2% in 2017, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2018, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.4%.
