Switzerland: Inflation softens in April

Consumer prices climbed 0.2% from the previous month in April, mirroring March’s reading. The figure was the result of higher prices for clothing items, flights and package holidays abroad, while fresh vegetables and domestic hospitality services were cheaper in April compared to March.

Inflation came in at 0.4% in April, below March’s 0.6% and a notch below market experts’ forecasts of 0.5%. The annual average variation in consumer prices was flat in April. (March: -0.1% year-on-year).

The Central Bank projects that prices will increase 0.3% in 2017 and 0.4% in 2018. Panelists polled by FocusEconomics expect inflation of 0.5% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2018, panelists expect inflation of 0.7%.
