Preliminary Q4 national accounts data showed the economy exited the technical recession it had entered in Q3 by a whisker. Despite the sequential GDP improvement, the 0.1% expansion fell short of market expectations. Pending a full release, the upturn was likely supported by a low base effect, while the Riksbank’s aggressive monetary policy tightening continued to heavily restrain the economy. That said, private consumption likely strengthened; it rose on average month on month in Q4, and monthly retail sales rebounded from Q3, expanding 0.6% on average in Q4. In particular, inflation averaged below Q3 in Q4, likely lending support to household budgets. Our Consensus is for a similarly shallow expansion in Q1. The services PMI revealed a stronger improvement in business conditions in January, but conditions in the manufacturing sector deteriorated at a steeper pace. In geopolitics, Sweden cleared the last hurdle to joining NATO on 26 February as Hungary cleared its bid.
