Spain: Retail sales post strongest increase in over four years in September

October 29, 2014

In September, retail sales rose 2.9% over the same month last year, which contrasted August’s 0.9% drop. The print marked the highest rate since March 2010. September’s increase mainly reflected a broad-based improvement, with sales of household goods and food recording the largest increases. On a working-day adjusted basis, retail sales expanded 1.1% over the same month last year (August: +0.3% year-on-year).

Annual average growth in retail sales remained at the previous month’s 0.3% in September, which had marked the highest level since April 2008.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 1.9% in 2014, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. The panel sees private consumption growth at 1.8% in 2015, which is also unchanged from last month’s estimate.
