Spain: Retail sales pick up steam in July

August 28, 2015

In July, retail sales rose 4.2% over the same month last year, which was above June’s 3.8% increase. July’s result marked a seven-month high. July’s figure was due to an almost across-the-board improvement in the index. Only sales of food products slowed compared to the previous month. On a working-day adjusted basis, retail sales in July expanded 4.2% over the same month last year, which was above June’s 2.1% rise.

As a result of July’s reading, the trend continued to improve as annual average growth in retail sales increased from the June’s 2.3% to 2.7%, which marked the highest level since November 2007.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see private consumption expanding 3.2% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees private consumption growth at 2.6%.
