Spain: Retail sales pick up pace in March

April 29, 2015

In March, retail sales rose 3.7% over the same month last year, which was above February’s revised 2.5% increase (previously reported: +2.6% year-on-year). February’s print had marked a three-month low. The result was mainly due to an acceleration in the sales of household goods and of food at general shops. In addition, sales of household equipment picked up pace. On a working-day adjusted basis, retail sales in March expanded 2.7% over the same month last year, which matched February’s result.

Annual average growth in retail sales increased from the previous month’s 1.5% to 1.7% in March, which marked the highest level since February 2008.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see private consumption expanding 2.7% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees private consumption growth at 2.1%.
