Spain: Growth in retail sales moderate in February

In February, retail sales rose 2.6% over the same month last year, which was below January’s revised 4.0% increase (previously reported: +4.2% year-on-year). February’s print marked a three-month low. The result was mainly a moderation in the sales of household goods and of food at general shops. On a working-day adjusted basis, retail sales expanded 2.7% over the same month last year in February, which was below January’s 3.9% rise.

Annual average growth in retail sales increased from the previous month’s 1.3% to 1.5% in February, which marked the highest level since February 2008.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see private consumption expanding 1.8% in 2015, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees private consumption growth at 1.9%.
