Spain: Inflation virtually unchanged in April

April 27, 2012

According to a preliminary estimate released by the National Statistical Institute (INE) on 27 April, annual inflation inched up from 1.9% in March to 2.0% in April. INE will release a complete set of data on 11 May. Detailed data for March showed consumer prices jumped 0.7% over the previous month, which was up from the 0.1% rise recorded in February. The monthly rise was mainly the result of higher prices for clothing and footwear as well as for transport. The core inflation index, which does not include prices for unprocessed food and energy, added 0.5% over the previous month, up from the flat reading recorded in February. Despite the increase, annual core inflation remained unchanged at March's 1.2%, its lowest level in over a year.
